Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has revealed that the company has a new Wii U game that is completely finished, but will not be released until Wii U sales reach an undisclosed point.
Speaking at an E3 roundtable, Guillemot stated the following:
“We have a game that has been done for six months; it is on our shelf waiting until more families to have the machine.
Nintendo is really coming with fantastic games, so they could – with the right price and very good games – get the machine to start.
If Wii U’s sales continue to multiply, it will quickly come to a mass market. We need the sales to increase so it becomes more mass market, and then we will have the volume we need to justify big marketing campaigns and TV marketing.
This game could never come out and could instead come out on another format that offers the same sort of experience. We will know this year how the machine goes.”
This is bizarre. On the one hand, I can understand why Ubisoft would want a larger install base. On the other hand, it’s unusual to have a completed game and then not release it.
This highlights an unfortunate catch-22 for Nintendo. Third parties do not flock to Wii U because sales are low, but some consumers are not buying the Wii U because of lack of third party support. Here’s hoping Mario Kart and Smash Bros. have the oomph the really get the Wii U ball rolling.

Seems like a waste of money to make something then not sell it?? Hopefully the Wii U continues to do well :)
