Happy 25th Birthday, Game Boy!

25 years ago today, the original, green-screened 8-bit wonder known as the Game Boy launched in Japan. Selling almost 120 million units, it revolutionized the way we played games on the go. Between Tetris, Pokemon, Zelda, Kirby, and various Mario games, Nintendo took hold of the portable market, and arguably, has never lost its grip.

Despite facing competitors with more advanced technology, the Game Boy was a smash hit, driving almost every opponent since into the ground. The only systems to even compete were the PSP and the PS Vita, which Nintendo has outsold 2-to-1 and 6-to-1, respectively.

To celebrate, let's all bust out our old Game Boys (or if you don't have one, go buy a Game Boy game on 3DS Virtual Console) and party like it's 1989. I'll be playing a little Kirby's Pinball, Super Mario Land and Link's Awakening. How about you?

How fun! So many great games! It's not surprising that Nintendo out-sells other companies :)
